Ich seh, ich seh was du nicht siehst

The film investigates art as a blind-field system. The starting point was a collaboration with the Laboratory for Cognitive Research in Art History (CReA), a research institute that analyzes perception using empirical methods: eye movements, trajectories of attention, fixations, reaction patterns… How do our perceptual receptors change in relation to art, how do we see, what do we look at, what attracts attention, and what do we overlook? What was decisive was the discovery of the “blind spot.” I was less interested in the measurability of the gaze than in this built-in failure zone of the blind spot, like a prepared non-seeing space within the visible, as a necessary share of the invisible. From there, the project shifts into an artistic research of invisibility. Various visual phenomena of looking at art are examined: how quickly a work adjusts itself to what one already knows, what one hopes to see or what one absolutely wants to find, what one’s own body of expectation pushes into the image. A pornographic edge of a cloud. A meaning that only appears because one has ordered it. The work becomes a projection surface, but also a surface of sabotage; not correct seeing, but understanding past the work.
